Toowoomba Regional Workshops
Sunday, 22 February 2015
St Joseph's College
54 James Street, Toowoomba
Student Workshop: 10.00am to 3.00pm
The 2015 Summer School will consist of a series of mini-lectures, workshops and discussion sessions. These sessions will be conducted by experienced debaters who will demonstrate the three key aspects of debating – matter, manner and method. The requirements of each of these areas become more extensive as debaters progress through the grades of the Schools Competition and, as such, the student workshop through its tiered discussion programme is highly valuable for both novice and seasoned debaters alike.
Coaches are encouraged to attend these seminars, as direction will be given with respect to the criteria used by adjudicators in grading a debater’s performance.
An attendance fee of $20 per student is payable on arrival. The QDU will also be offering a 25% discount for fully paid (pre-purchased) tickets to this event. Details will be available early in the new year. The QDU requests that schools send teachers, coaches or parents as well to supervise their students, entry for adults is free.
Any enquiries with respect to the 2015 QDU Summer Schools should be directed to the QDU Administrator on (07) 3870 0680.
QDU Adjudicator Accreditation: 12.00pm to 3.00pm
Adjudicators in the Toowoomba region are accredited by attending a seminar on adjudication, and then completing a written adjudication of a debate made available online to be accessed at the adjudicator's convenience. The QDU accredits adjudicators at various levels for the purposes of the competition, progressing from Levels 1-2 (the first step for adjudicators),Level 3 (available after two years adjudicating), and Level 4 (adjudicators at this level are trained specifically for the Senior A competition and are invited to accredit at the discretion of the Adjudicator's Vice-President).
The QDU is pleased to be able certify Professional Development Hours for teachers who adjudicate throughout the year. Teachers who complete the two-hour seminar and then consolidate their learning through an adjudication of two debates (1 hour) will be able to be certified with three hours of PD Training. We are able to be flexible in the assignment of teachers who also coach teams, so please contact the QDU if you have any queries.
In addition, adjudicators who have been accredited at either Level 3 or 4 for two years are not required to complete annual re-accreditation. Instead, adjudicators are required to attend, every two years, a refresher session. This enables adjudicators to watch a debate and then discuss with other adjudicators their thoughts.
Coaches Workshop: 10.00am to 12.00pm
Good coaching can make all the difference to debaters. The support and knowledge that a coach offers can significantly raise debating performance and, just as importantly, enjoyment of the debating experience. The QDU Coaches’ Seminars instructs coaches in both mechanics of QDU debating and in techniques and strategies for helping student achieve their full potential in the debating arena. They also provide a useful forum for sharing ideas, answering questions and facilitating communication between schools and the QDU. Conducted by experienced coaches, these seminars have received excellent feedback from participants.
The coaches’ seminars are an extremely useful learning tool for both beginner and advanced coaches. There are two different seminars available:
Beginners: Basic debating overview, preparation techniques, style and content advice, training games and activities for younger debaters.
Advanced: Strategic case preparation for older levels, development of more sophisticated argumentation based on more advanced analytical techniques such as group segmentation, focus on tactical debating including strategic use of definitions, models and caselines.
An attendance fee of $20 per person is payable on arrival. The QDU will also be offering a 25% discount for fully paid (pre-purchased) tickets to this event.
